Marilyn's first time as a 2nd wedding shooter!
Mostly I've helped my husband Rick documenting and video recording weddings as the "human assisted, off camera flash stand" and as a gear jockey. Occasionally I captured detail shots using our 105mm macro and have been asked to man the stationary video camera on the tripod now and then. For the very first time at this wedding, I said that I wanted to be the full on, "second shooter" and just go for it, do my thing-or discover what do my thing might actually be. So I grabbed the APS-C body, a 56mm f/1.4 lens and a gorgeous 75mm f/1.2 lens and went for it. Well I quickly learned about "Aperture Priority" mode and setting up "Auto ISO" and with no pressure whatsoever, went crazy capturing what I envisioned instead of capturing someone else's (my husband's) vision. Hey, it's my first time shooting more than stationary objects so there are no expectations, right? My husband is paid to run around and "calmly" stress about capturing the wedding as per the couple's (bride's) wishes...I'm just the "assistant."

Well I don't know what it's like to be the main photographer or videographer at events and weddings, but knowing my husband as well as I do, I can see through his playful and calm demeanor working such events and can tell he gets a little worked up inside at times. I can tell you all that helping out as a second shooter or video recording B-roll is where it's at! It's a total blast...and who gets blamed if something doesn't work out?

It was so much fun interacting with the bride, Carla, her daughter and family behind the scenes; quickly developing a natural rapport and making it so easy to capture her day! So naturally, I'm really looking forward to our next event in a couple of weeks. Who knows? Maybe Rick will be transitioning to the "human assisted flash stand!"
